The calm after the storm ❄️ The storm, of course, being 7 miles of rocky hiking, a little under 4000 foot elevation gain, high Sierra sun, and a gnarly altitude headache that only went away after two @backpackerspantry breakfast skillets wrapped in tortillas, with avocados and Taco Bell hot sauce [byobb - bring your own breakfast burritos]. All worth it for this peaceful n’ private frozen lake. What was the calmest part of your day today?
Went online last Tuesday, noticed that there were still some Whitney zone permits available for this weekend, and snagged em for a super early season opener (quite possibly my earliest summer backpacking trip yet!). We knew that winter conditions still existed from Trail Camp up (and we do not have any winter mountaineering skills or equipment), so we decided to head up to Consultation Lake for a night! It was so cool to explore the Whitney Zone without feeling hurried to be on the summit or back at the trailhead πŸ˜… This area is so so beautiful - it felt so good to have an opportunity to actually appreciate its nooks n crannies. Feeling grateful to have taken advantage of the one good thing that comes out of a low snow year - early access to the mountains. Summer backpacking season has begun!!
BACK IN THE SACK
Thought I signed up for a 7 mile hike this morning; ended up being 11.5 miles (including a one mile detour because we missed the trail turnoff πŸ˜…). Great first monster hike of the year… and as we discovered, first monster hike of our thirties. No wonder we are already so sore!!
β€œI have crossed the Range of Light, surely the brightest and best of all the Lord has built. And, rejoicing in its glory, I gladly, gratefully, hopefully pray I may see it again.” JM β˜€οΈπŸ”
Celebrating the big 3-0 today! Wishing I was celebrating on trail, but celebrating by avoiding Slack messages and zoom meetings will have to do πŸ˜‚πŸŽ‰ #HSTonfilm
